William Barclay

William Garlitz “Bill” Barclay of Lonaconing, MD passed away on Friday, January 30, 2020 at 80 years old. Born on March 8, 1939, he was preceded in death by his father, Garlitz Barclay and mother, Mary Elizabeth “Babe” Atkinson. A loving husband (nearly 63 years), father, grandfather, and brother he is survived by his wife Peg; children Lisa Barclay Miller, Bryan and wife Autumn and Joe and girlfriend Larena; his brother Paul; sister Mickey; one aunt Anna May (Barclay) Layman and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a proud grandfather of Justin, Hunter, Colby and Walker.

A 1957 graduate of Valley High School in Lonaconing, MD, Bill went on to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves, Cresaptown and made his career of 44 years at Westvaco Paper Mill. Bill was a lifelong Roman Catholic and parishioner of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Frostburg, MD.

An avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed his time hiking through the woods and shared that passion with his children and grandchildren as his father and grandfather did before him. Bill was a reader of poetry and shared his love for poetry at family gatherings and in reading to his grandchildren, often reciting from memory.

Family and Friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A. Lonaconing on Saturday, February 1, 2020 from Noon – 2:00 PM. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 PM with Deacon Harold Bradley officiating. Interment will be held at Frostburg Memorial Park.

The family thanks Hospice and Egle Nursing Home and Rehab Center for their care and compassion in the last years of Bill’s life, as well as the Lonaconing Rescue Squad.  The family requests no flowers be sent, but welcomes donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Maryland Chapter, alz.org/Maryland/donate or mail to: 1850 York Road Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.

Pallbearers will be friends and family; honorary pallbearer will be Thomas Trannum, Jr.
