Wayne Steele, 79, of Washington Street, Lonaconing died Saturday, February 17, 2018 at his residence. Born on March 19, 1938 in Lonaconing he was the son of the late Andrew Steele and Dorothy (Phillips) Steele.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing. A 1956 graduate of Valley High School, he worked for the Allegany County Department of Social Services as a supervisor for many years. He was Past Mayor of Lonaconing and helped to create the Allegany County Crime Solvers for the George’s Creek area. A proud 52 year member of the Good Will Volunteer Fire Department #1, he formerly served as Chaplin. He also worked as an EMT for the George’s Creek Ambulance Service.
Wayne was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring after 20 years of service. He began his military career by serving for 7 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was member of the Barton American Legion Post #189 and a life member of VFW Post #15021. He was also a member of the Midland Sportsmans Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Louise (Johnson) Steele; two children, Kevin Steele and wife Beth of Washington, PA and Debbie Cebotar and husband Mike of Lonaconing; four grandchildren, Justin Steele and fiancé Hannah, Brendon Steele and wife Danielle, Aden Cebotar and Katelyn Cebotar; four great-grandchildren, Dallas, Maddox, Saydie and Mia Steele; a sister, Betty Snyder of Westernport; several nieces and nephews; fishing buddy, John Elmer Ravenscroft and special neighbors, the Highs and the Holsheys.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing. A memorial service will be held at 7:00PM by the Good Will Volunteer Fire Company #1. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Bruce McBride officiating. Interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Muir, Alex McAlpine, Joe Inskeep, Chuck Ternent, Kirk Green and Greg Nicol.
