Walter Ezra "Bud" Gomer, 92, of Klondike died Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center, Lonaconing. Born on September 1, 1920 in Wellersburg, PA, Mr. Gomer was the son of the late James Garfield Gomer and Nora (Meyers) Gomer. He was the last surviving member of his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline E. Gomer in 2007; four brothers, Harvey, Harry, Earl and Edward Gomer; three sisters, Ethel Winebrenner, Mary Imes and Dorothy Stott and a daughter-in-law, Mary Gomer.
He is survived by his children, daughter Judy Walker and husband Charles, son Robert Gomer and daughter Linda Kenney and husband Paul; his grandchildren, Wes Walker, Tricia Baker and husband Eric, Bobby Gomer, Mindy Robinson and husband Jeff and Mandy Johnson and husband Brad and his great-grandchildren, Alethea, Tristin, Tessa, Lydia, Zander and Zain.
Bud enlisted in the service from January 8 of 1942 to September 14 of 1945. He was an engineer gunner aboard the B24 Liberator Bomber for the U.S. Air Force serving in WWII. During his service time he received a Silver Star, an Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, a Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 7 Bronze Stars. He made 50 missions over enemy territory. He also said that his crew, to the best of his knowledge, was the only crew that all members received the Silver Star.
He was a carpenter for most of his life, he built all three of his children's homes. He retired from Frostburg State University from the carpenter department. Bud was a member of the Carlos United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Farrady Post #24 American Legion, Frostburg, MD and the Queens Point Memorial Post #6775 V.F.W., McCoole, MD.
Family and friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Midland on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 1:00 PM with Rev. George Harpold officiating. Interment will be held at Frostburg Memorial Park. Military Rites will be accorded by Farrady Post #24 American Legion, Frostburg, MD.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Walker, Paul Kenney, Wes Walker, Bobby Gomer, Eric Baker and Larry Cutter.
