Sandra D. Grandstaff, 73, of Timber Ridge Drive, Frostburg and formerly of Lonaconing, died suddenly on October 12, 2013 at her residence. Born on November 4, 1939 in Frostburg she was the daughter of the late James Max Dillon and Helen Katherine (Reiber) Dillon Broadwater.
She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Clifton J. Broadwater.
Sandy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing where she served as organist since 1953 and Choir Director since 1971. She also served as a Sunday School Teacher, was an Administrative Board Member and a member of the United Methodist Women.
She was a graduate of Valley High School Class of 1957. She furthered her education at Frostburg State University where she earned a BS in Education in 1961 and an MS in Education on 1965. She retired from the Allegany County Board of Education in 1995 after 34 years of teaching elementary school in Garrett County and music in the Allegany County School System.
Sandy was a dedicated and very active member of the George's Creek community. She served as Fund Drive Chairman for the George's Creek Regional Library, Archivist for the George's Creek Regional Library History Room, Dispatcher for the George's Creek Ambulance Service and Director of the George's Creek Community Choir.
She was also a member of the George's Creek Promotion Council, Lonaconing Lions Club, Allegany County Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma ETA Chapter-Educator's Sorority, Allegany County Library System Board of Trustees and the Frostburg Soroptimist Association.
She directed the Lonaconing 150th Anniversary Pageant "Where Waters Meet" in 1987.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Richard Grandstaff; one daughter, Amy Welch and husband Michael of Delaware, OH; three grandchildren, Ryan Welch, Audrey Welch and Anna Welch all of Delaware, OH; one great-grandson, Carter Welch-Clark; her half-brother, James Dillon of Juneau, Alaska and two nieces and three nephews.
Sandy was a special person and a positive influence on all she met. Her life's mission was to do her part to make the world a better place. She worked tirelessly during her professional career and equally as much for the church and community. She always made time for those she loved. People were her priority. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by all.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Friday, October 18, 2013 from 2-4 PM and 6-8PM at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing with Rev. Fred Iser and Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating. A shuttle service will be available from the funeral home parking lot to the church on Saturday due to limited parking at the church.
