Onas Hanekamp

Onas H. Hanekamp went to be with God on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at his home with his wife and son at his side. Born on October 10, 1946 in Cumberland he was the son of the late Onas D. Hanekamp and Beulah (Teter) Hanekamp.

He was preceded in death by his first wife JaneAnn (Evans) Hanekamp.

Onas graduated from Valley High School in 1964 and he joined the Navy shortly after. He was a hospital Corpsman in the Navy at Philadelphia Naval Hospital. He spent 2 and ½ years in the Second Marine Division during the Vietnam War.

He worked for four years in the Memorial Hospital ER and was a dialysis tech at Memorial Hospital. The rest of his working career as a dialysis tech was spent at Independent Dialysis on Frederick Street in Cumberland.  He retired in 2009 and became ill within a month. Onas then survived numerous illnesses till his death.

Onas enjoyed the outdoors and worked several years on and off in the church camp system. He was an avid biker, loved to canoe, kayak, raft, fish, hunt, cross country and downhill ski and gardening. He learned to do woodworking in the Navy and built some furniture that is still in use.

Most of all Onas was a kind, gentle, caring soul; he helped and touched so many people throughout his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years Susan (Beams) Hanekamp; sons Onas R. Hanekamp and Scott R Hanekamp and wife Carol; a sister Barbara Bittinger and husband Paul; grandchildren Sean, Kiri and Oden and several aunts, uncles and nephews.

At his request he will be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 2-5PM. Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing assisted the family.
