Melvin Holmes Russell, Sr., 87, of Lonaconing passed away on Friday, November 7, 2014 at his home. Born on August 14, 1927 he was the son of the late Mildred (Holmes) Russell Potter and Robert Archibald Russell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Crable) Russell of 59 years.
Melvin retired from the Allegany County Roads department after 20 years of service and was a Supervisor in the Knapp's Meadow office. He enjoyed being outside working or tinkering in his garage. He could often be seen in the field behind his house with his goats or taking walks all over the mountainside and talking with various neighbors. Whether sitting on a porch, a swing or just stopping by while walking Sammy, he was full of stories and he liked to reminisce about days gone by.
He is survived by his son, Melvin "Butch" Russell and wife Patty of Lonaconing, a daughter, Janice (Russell) McClintock and husband John of LaVale and a daughter, Diane (Russell) Waites and husband Jeff of Cumberland. He is also survived by one grandson, Shawn Nicholas Russell of Austin, TX and special friend Kelly Gough.
Family and friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A, Lonaconing on Monday, November 10, 2014 from 3-5PM and 7-9PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 11:00AM with Rev. Thomas Morgan officiating. Interment will be private at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
