Joseph Schlereth

June 12, 1938 — August 22, 2019

Joseph “Joe” Henry Schlereth, 81, of Allegany Street, Lonaconing died Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland. Born on June 12, 1938 in Detmold he was the son of the late Gilbert Thomas Schlereth and Sarah Jane (Neat) Schlereth.

Joe was veteran of the U.S. Army. He was catholic by faith and a former member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, Lonaconing where he sang in the choir and participated in all activities. He attended Assumption Catholic Church in Keyser, WV.  A 1956 graduate of Valley High School, Joe retired from Westvaco Corporation as a foreman. After his retirement Joe assisted at Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing. He was always willing to lend a hand. He coached girls’ softball and sang with One Accord. He was a lifetime member of the Good Will Fire Volunteer Fire Dept. #1, Lonaconing. He was also a charter member of the Lonaconing Jaycees. Joe enjoyed camping and going to the beach but what he most valued was time spent with family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Betty (Williams) Schlereth; four children Jodi Stanton and husband Dana of Midland, Paula Jo Ferguson and husband Keith of Milton, PA, Barbra Jo Jacobs and husband Jason of Lonaconing and Ian Joseph Schlereth also of Lonaconing; four grandchildren Jonathan, Gage, Hannah and Avery; a brother Tom Schlereth; two sisters Frances Sires and Patricia Estes and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, August 25, 2019 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 26, 2019 at 11:00 AM with Deacon Harold Bradley officiating. Interment will be held St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Lonaconing.

For 29 of his last 33 days Joe was a patient of the Intensive Care Unit at WMRMC and the family would like to thank them for the excellent care he received and support they were shown, you became part of our family.

At the request of the family memorial donations can be made in memory of Joe to the Good Will Volunteer Fire Dept. at 6 Douglas Ave., Lonaconing, MD 21539 and or the George’s Creek Ambulance Service at 19 Union St., Lonaconing, MD 21539.
