John Edward Buckholtz, Jr., 89, of Lower Georges Creek Road, Lonaconing died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland. Born on February 28, 1925 in Lonaconing he was the son of the late John Edward Buckholtz, Sr. and Myrtle Mae (Jones) Buckholtz.
He was preceded in death by a sister and brother, Margaret Shirley Jeffrey and George Robert Buckholtz.
John was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII in the 101st Airborne Division. He earned the following awards: Glider Badge, Parachutist Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead and Belgian Fouraggeres.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing. He graduated from Central High School in the class of 1942 and retired from P.P.G. after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pearl Virginia Buckholtz of Egle Nursing Home; two sons, John Edward Buckholtz III and wife Virginia of Lonaconing and Robert Jeffrey Buckholtz of Antioch, TN; one grandson, John Edward Buckholtz IV and wife Mandy of Lonaconing; one great-grandson, Cameron Buckholtz; one sister, Florence Jane Johnson of Barton and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and Friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Fred Iser officiating. Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland. Military rites will be accorded by Farrady Post #24 American Legion, Frostburg, MD.
