Harold William Moyer, 91, of Church Street, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland. Born on December 17, 1923 in Westernport he was the son of the late Willard I. Moyer and Virginia M. (Schell) Moyer.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ida Mae (McIntyre) Moyer in November of 2001, his son, Harold Richard Moyer on December of 1985, two sisters, Ethel Pase and Thelma Brown and two brothers, Harry Moyer and Glenn Moyer.
He was a WWII Veteran serving as a medic in the U.S. Army. He fought in Germany and France and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was member of Barton American Legion Post #189 and the former Alvin C. Neat Post #5280 V.F.W., Lonaconing, MD where he was past Quarter Master and Commander.
He graduated from Central High School and earned his Masters in Education from Frostburg Teacher's College. A retiree from the Allegany County Board of Education he taught for 30 years at Westernport Elementary School and Barton Elementary School. He also spent time teaching youth at the Savage Mountain Youth Center, Lonaconing in the GED program. During his working years he also owned and operated Rich's Grocery and Sport's Shop in Barton. During the 1960's he was part of the Lonaconing Town Council and Mayor of Lonaconing.
Harold was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He also sang at many weddings. He enjoyed turkey hunting, fishing and watching baseball.
He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Lynn Williams of Frostburg and Vivian Jane Paul of Ohio; three grandsons, Christopher Lee Paul of Ohio, Jason Michael of Ohio and Thomas Matthew Williams of Eckhart; one sister, JoAnn Taylor of Moscow and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing on Sunday, January 4, 2015 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM. The Barton American Legion Post #189 will hold a memorial service at 6:00PM. A funeral service will he held on Monday, January 5, 2015 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Thomas Morgan officiating. Interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lonaconing.
His family extends a special thank you to his caregivers, Judy Thomas, Carol McKenzie and Linda Willis for the exceptional care given to him before entering the Egle Nursing Home. They would also like to thank the facility and staff of the Egle Nursing Home for the excellent care provided to Harold during his time of residency.
