Gerald Simpson Cook, 79, of Florida Way, Lonaconing died Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Frostburg Village Nursing Home with his son at his side. Born on May 20, 1937 in Lonaconing he was the son of the late Archie B. Cook and Flora E. (Simpson) Cook.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Catherine Arlene (Jones) Cook on July 6, 2012, brother and sister-in-law Archie and Violet Cook, nephew Donald Cook Jr., brother and sister-in-law Donald “Frosty” and Elizabeth “Libby” Cook, sister Flora “Flo” Lease, sister-in-law Ruth Jones and brother-in-law Francis “Sonny” Trenum. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was of the Methodist faith and a 1956 graduate of Valley High School. Gerald was a letter carrier in Lonaconing. He began his career in 1961 and retired in June of 1992 with 30 ½ years of service as part of the Local 638 Letter Carriers, Cumberland. A member of the Good Will Volunteer Fire Department #1 Lonaconing, he was awarded the William H. Smith Jr Award for 50 years of service in 2013. In 1996 he was inducted into the AGCVRFA Hall of Flame and currently had over 54 years of volunteer service. He was a lifetime member of the Georges Creek Ambulance Service; he had driven the ambulance for 25 years. He was also a lifetime member of Allegany County Fire Police, a member of Georges Creek Valley Masonic Lodge #161 AF & AM, Lonaconing, formerly a member of the IOOF #94 Odd Fellows, Barton and currently the IOOF #1 Odd Fellows, Baltimore, the Junior Order of Mechanics and the West-Mar Chapter #410 of the NARFE.
He survived by his only son, Gerald James Cook at home; two brothers-in-law, Paul Lease of LaVale and James Jones of Covington, Georgia; one sister-in-law Evelyn Trenum of Barton and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM. A memorial service will be held at 7:00PM by the Good Will Volunteer Fire Company and at 8:00PM by the Georges Creek Valley Masonic Lodge #161 AF & AM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 1:00PM with Rev. Fred Iser officiating. Interment will be held at Mt. View Cemetery, Moscow Mills.

The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses and various facilities that have been part of Gerald’s healthcare since he received a liver transplant in 1994.
