Edith Jeffries

September 25, 1919 — August 8, 2017

Edith Marie Elliott Jeffries, our dear mother, passed on to the eternal life August 8, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Richard Nevin Elliott and Ethel Robertson Elliott.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Henry Jeffries, her son Warren Donald Jeffries and her sister Wilma Elliott Ponder.

In her almost 98 years Edith faced many challenges. She wanted to go to college and study mathematics when she graduated from Central High School in 1937. But as a child of the depression there was simply no money to do so. Edith served her community as the leader of a very popular Girl Scout troop. Many women have shared fond memories of their times with her. She was proud of her community, her country and her church. Edith stayed in the little town of Midland most of her life. She married “Bing” in 1942; they lived on Dan’s Rock Road and raised four children there. Bing died in 1968 and Edith was challenged with raising their two youngest alone. Their two boys were serving in the military. She returned to school, graduated from Cathermans Business School and began working in the Allegany County Tax Assessors office where she enjoyed her work and made many friends. In 1982 she retired. In her retirement she enjoyed art classes, painting, ceramics, and helping to raise the next generation of our family.

Edith is survived by son Richard “Dick” Jeffries; daughters Elizabeth Malin and husband Charlie and Lois Keifer and husband Paul; six grandchildren Robert Huffman, John Jeffries, Warren Jeffries, Kristina Giffin, Suzanne Jones and Paul Keifer and seven great grandchildren. Edith is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Mom taught us many lessons, to be honest, to value family and friends, and to take care of each other. Even though she is not with us today we take comfort in the fact that she is in the presence of the Lord and for that we rejoice. Praise God that we were allowed to have her for 97 years.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Midland. A funeral service will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church, Midland on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 1:00PM with Rev. Heerak Kim officiating. Interment will be held Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg.

The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Grace United Methodist Church at 19802 Church Hill Road SW, Midland, MD 21532.
