David Evans Sr., 92, of Lonaconing, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at his home.
Born April 20, 1919, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Benjamin H. Evans and Mary S. Evans. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jean Shaw Evans, and two brothers, Benjamin H. Evans Jr. and John H. Evans.
Dave graduated from Central High School and studied Engineering at Potomac State two years prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army.
Dave served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Japanese Prisoner of War and survived the Bataan Death March. He was employed by the Western Maryland Railroad, George F. Hazelwood Construction Company and the Army Corp of Engineers. He was the retired President of the Evans Realty Company and the Lonaconing Water Company.
Dave is survived by his daughter, Sally K. Miller and husband Gilbert, of LaVale; son, David M. Evans Jr. and wife Marilyn, of LaVale; three grandchildren, Tiffany Darr and husband Joseph, of Eckhart, Megan Evans, of New York, and Morgan Evans, of LaVale; two great-grandchildren, JB and Evan Darr; and his brother, Aleck S. Evans, of Lonaconing.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lonaconing and the Georges Creek Valley 161 AF & AM Lodge.
The family will receive friends at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, Monday, May 16, 2011, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Georges Creek Valley Lodge 161 AF & AM will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Monday at 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the First Presbyterian Church of Lonaconing on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Morgan officiating.
Pallbearers will be Benjamin H. Evans III, Edward E. Evans, Joseph Darr, Edward J. McPartland, Leonard Hughes, and Gary Sloan.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow.
Graveside military rites will be accorded by Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Western Maryland Home Hospice, 1050 Industrial Blvd., Ste. 15, Cumberland, MD 21502 or the First Presbyterian Church, 1 East Main St., Lonaconing, MD 21539.
