Sometime in the soft quiet dawn of a new day, Sept. 3, 2015, Dale R. Lewis Sr. died peacefully in his sleep lying beside the love of his life.
Dale was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, David Lewis and Martha Jane (Jones) Lewis, Frostburg; maternal grandparents, James A. Broadwater and Martha Katherine (Platter) Broadwater, Avilton; parents, Owen Lewis Sr. and Eva Mae (Broadwater) Lewis, Frostburg; brother Owen Lewis Jr. and his wife, Phyllis (Ritchie) Lewis of Westernport; and a daughter, who died at birth and is buried in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Lonaconing.
Dale is survived by his his wife of 59 years, Eileen (Byrnes) Lewis; brother, James Marvin Lewis and his wife, Lois (Filer) of Alden, N.Y.; his sisters, Martha Jane (Lewis) Stafford and husband, Henry of Avilton; Donna (Lewis) Summers of Frederick; and Ruth Ann (Lewis) Neilson of Frostburg; brother-in-law, Monsignor Paul A. Byrnes of Swanton and sister-in-law, Diana Byrnes of Portland, Ore.
He is also survived by three sons, Dale R. Lewis Jr. and his wife, Michelle (Athey) of Palmyra, Pa.; Michael P. Lewis and his wife, Abby (Schroyer), Frostburg; and Joseph M. Lewis and his wife, Sheila (Johnson), Barton; two daughters, Maria Lewis and her significant other, Kenny Harris, of Lonaconing; and Beth (Lewis) Butler and husband, Rusty, of Bel Air, Cumberland.
In addition, Dale is survived by his grandchildren, Tressa (Lewis) Clark and husband, Jason, Lonaconing; Renae (Lewis) Foutz and husband, Josh, of Lonaconing; Tressa and Renae’s mother is Cindy Fuente; Eric Johnson and wife, Carlie (Boal), Westernport; Jordan Lewis and Robbie Fazzalore of Keyser; Jasmine Lewis and fiancé, Josh Pritts, Hatfield, Pa.; Erin Kelly Lewis of Frostburg; Jodie Lewis and significant other, Kirk Sweeney, of Falling Waters, W.Va.; Maggie (Lewis) Drew and her husband, Derek, of Frostburg; Carlie Lewis of Barton; Christina (Clark) Ujcic and husband, David, of Short Gap, W.Va.; Brian Clark and wife, Jennifer (Hardman), of Barton; and Kirby Butler, Bel Air, Cumberland.
Great-grandchildren include Chase Clark and wife, Billie Jean (Weems), Colton and Calan Clark, Seth Johnson, Zachary Foutz, Jocelyn Lewis, Leighton and Emrick Johnson, and Cambrya and Cash Weston Clark.
Dale is also survived by nephews, Dylan Byrnes and wife, Beven and their children, Ava and Grace; Steve, David, Tim, and Keith Lewis; Christa, Randy, and Patty Stafford; Mark, Susan, and Eva Marie Summers; Jimmy and Brad Lewis; and Andy, Eric, and Jill Poland. Dale was also blessed with numerous cousins.
Dale’s work career began at Grant Photo in Lakewood, Ohio, before moving back to work at Celenese Fibers, Kelly Springfield Tire Company, and he was a Realtor with Caldwell Banker (Liz Rhodes was his broker — what a wonderful lady).
Dale’s political career was extensive and rewarding. While reflecting on his life, and his own obituary, Dale wrote, “I thank all of the citizens of Allegany County for placing their trust and faith in me. I was elected to the Republican Central Committee for four terms, the Allegany County Board of Education for four terms and the Allegany County Commission for three terms.”
Dale was awarded the Lonaconing Hall of Fame Civic Award in 1984, a member of the Good Will Fire Company for over 60 years, the Lonaconing Republican Club for over 50 years, a Life member of Lodge 40 Maryland State Police, and a member of the Moose Lodge 348, Frostburg.
Dale has requested to be cremated.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter Catholic Church in Westernport on Monday, Sept. 7, 2015, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be prior to the celebration of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Celebrants will be Monsignor Paul Byrnes, Father Ed Hendricks, and Father Doug Kenney. Please join the family for refreshments and a meal after the service at the church.
Burial arrangements will be held privately at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
