Billy Leo Bennett, 79, of Cumberland and Lakeland, FL where he and Margie spent their winters and formerly of Lonaconing was lifted up on angel’s wings on Monday, July 9, 2018 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland. Born in Swanton on May 4, 1939 he was the son of the late Irvin and Hazel (Gaither) Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor (VanHorn) Bennett in 1998, a brother Ronald Bennett, a sister Shirley Baker, a grandson Nicholas Greenwell and two nephews Steve and Randy Courtney.

A graduate of Bruce High School, class of 1958, he was an avid sports player. Billy set the record for most goals scored in a soccer game (6) in Allegany County and he held that record for 45 years, until it was broken in 2002. A Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served proudly from 1958-1961 as a Lance Corporal. During his time in the military he played basketball for the Marines. He was member of the Westernport American Legion Post #155.  He retired from Westvaco after 40 years of service. While working at Westvaco he was part of the golf team; he won many awards and trophies. He was also a life member of the Haystack Mountain Sportsmens Club.

He is survived by his children Luray Greenwell and husband John of Frederick, MD, Richard Bennett and wife Pam of Oldtown, MD, Marty Bennett of Frostburg and Linda Wolf and husband Ray of New Waterford, OH;  fiancé Margie (Cook) Murphy; nine grandchildren Lyz (Greenwell) Vanderhuff, R.J. Bennett, Megan (Wolf) Reese, Lucas Leo Wolf, Tyler Bennett, Elliott Bennett, Miranda Bennett, John P. Greenwell II and Raymond Wolf III; ten great-grandchildren and number eleven, a baby girl due in November; brother Irvin “Sonner” Bennett and wife Sandy of Barton; sister Emma Courtney and husband Doug of Keyser, WV; sister-in-law Lois Bennett of Lonaconing; brother-in-law Jack Baker of Midland and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 7-9PM at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Midland. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Deacon Harold Bradley officiating. Interment will be held at Frostburg Memorial Park. Military Rites will be accorded by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172, Cumberland.

Pallbearers will be grandsons John P., Tyler, Ray, Elliott, R.J. and Lucas; honorary pallbearer will be special friend Steven Gardner.

The family would like to thank the facility and staff of the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center for the excellent care provided to Billy during his time spent there. They would also like to thank the staff of WMRMC High Level Care unit for the great care they provided.
