Bernadette Dolores Brown, 91, of Lonaconing, passed peacefully at Egle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, November 21, 2015. Born in Lonaconing on February 10, 1924 she was the daughter of the late Terence Devlin and Nannie (Symons) Devlin.
She as formerly a member of the St. Mary’s of the Annunciation Church, Lonaconing. There she was active in the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary and sang in the church choir until the church closed. She was a current member of the Mountain Four Parishes of Western Maryland.
Bernadette was a 1941 graduate of Central High School and attended Catherman’s Business School. She was a homemaker for many years. She was employed by Sears for twenty-eight years, in the downtown Cumberland location, the Searstown location, and the Country Club Mall location. At Sears she developed lasting friendships with Silda Speir and Aldine Izat.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her husband, James K. Brown, Lonaconing, three sisters, Ellen Goldsworthy, Frostburg, Anna Devlin and Alice Steele, Lonaconing. Six brothers, Henry, Pittsburg, Joe, LaVale, John, Newark, OH, Ignatius, Thomas and William, Lonaconing and a granddaughter, Cindy Young, Glen Burnie. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her daughter, Florence (Susie) Young and husband Daniel, Midland, grandson Mark Young and friend Brenda Reese, Brenda’s sons Owen and Aaryn Reese, Lonaconing, granddaughter Shawn Young and friend Greg Olson, Reisterstown, great-grandsons Adam Young and wife Jen, Lonaconing and Drew Young, Barton and their mother, Kathy Haney and husband Chuck, Barton, great-great grandsons Wesley Young and Gavin Young, Lonaconing, sister-in-law, Marion Brown, Shaft and many very close nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A. in Lonaconing on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 10:00 AM at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Barton with Father Ed Hendricks, celebrant. Interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lonaconing.
Bernadette’s family wishes to thank her loving home caregivers, the staff of 7 North, Western Maryland Health System, the outstanding staff at Egle Nursing Home, her good neighbor Ernie and her granddaughter Shawn Young for their dedication in caring for Bernadette.
