Ann J. “Nancy” Smith, 83, of Lonaconing, died quietly at Western Maryland Hospital Center on Oct. 24 after a brief illness.
Known as “Nancy,” she grew up in the double-block house where she was born at 23 Robin Street in Lonaconing, surrounded by women named Ann, including her mother; her cousin, Anna Powers Evans, next door; and both grandmothers.
Born Sept. 29, 1933, she is the daughter of Leslie E. Clark and Annie Devlin Clark. She was preceded in death by three older brothers, Leslie J. Clark, Joseph L. Clark and John F. “Butch” Clark.
She was married to her husband, Alexander M. “Ike” Smith of Lonaconing for 49 years. He worked for the Westvaco Corporation in Luke for 43 years. He died in 2007.
She was a basketball player, the mother of a basketball player and a fan of all of her grandchildrens' sports teams, including gymnastics, football, baseball and volleyball.
A 1951 graduate of Central High School and, later, Catherman's Business School, she worked at the Celanese Corporation in Cumberland for five years before starting a family, which was the focus of the remainder of her life.
Although she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she remained active.
She is survived by two children, Alexa Smith of Lonaconing, and David Smith of Jacksonville, FL; one daughter-in-law, Stacy Smith, and two granddaughters, Erin Smith and Alie Smith, all of Jacksonville; and one grandson, Cory Smith of Boca Raton, FL; and a large extended family, including 24 nieces and nephews.
She attended St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Westernport, MD.
Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the funeral home, with Father Edward Hendricks officiating. The committal service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at the Frostburg Memorial Park. Deacon Harold Bradley will officiate.
